December 01 My New BlogI have finally moved!
It was getting too troublesome to have 2 different sites and so I have moved to http://buzymum.blogspot.com
I hope you will pay me a visit soon. I promise to update my blog as much as possible. November 13 Ryan's milestonesRyan has started to be more verbal over the last 2 weeks.
Not only is he babbling more, he is also using a lot more "real" words and also more expressions.
Last week he made me proud by being able to put together 2 word sentences. He is showing that he is connecting thoughts and it just amazes me so much. How can somebody so tiny grow up so quickly and able to converse to me his needs?
Everytime he says "Pain pain", I will ask him where and he will point to let me know. He has this funny little "pain" on his right leg which he always points to me. After a while, I think he just said it to me to get my attention, so I will ask "Really?" He will then smile and proceed to bend over to kiss his little leg.
I was worried that as a boy Ryan will be all tough and insensitive, so from a very young age, I have taught him to be considerate. So, now, whenever he gets excited/ frustrated, he will start to hit whatever in his way (that includes me sometimes). So, instead of smacking him, I told him that it hurts (be it tables or chairs or mummy) and then ask him to "sayang" back and kiss it. So now, he will do this everytime he hits something. It is just so fulfilling that this is getting through to him. I hope that Ryan will grow to be a considerate person.
Ryan's daddy is always palying roughly with him and my heart skips a beat every time father and son rolls around. Sometimes Daddy Ryan will smack his little bum to play, and sometimes this little smack can be "to smack-y" and Ryan will show a face of pain. Every time I confront Daddy Ryan, he will deny and say that Ryan is fine. However, Ryan can now tell me about it and say "Mama .... daddy ... pain pain ... tock tock" so then I will know that Daddy Ryan has smacked his buttock till he is now in pain. Daddy Ryan watched out!!!
Ah .... having a kid is certainly fulfilling but it has not yet compensated for the worry I have about his future.
Anyway, I have not regretted one bit about having Ryan. He is now the love of my life (shh ... don't let Daddy Ryan know - he is already going green in envy!) Hehehe .... November 10 Money TalkFor people who know me, it is no secret that I am a HUGE money fan, then again who isn't right?
But I am a little obsessed with it so much so that friends actually say that I stressed them out talking about this topic. And actually, this includes my husband too.
This has lead to many disagreements and has gone to a degree that talking about money in the household will make one of us annoyed and the other sleepy. Both my husband and I have grown up in households which did not have the best of everything and money was always an issue. The result is that we have our own ideas about money - although it can be very different.
I tend to be very positive where money is concern, prefering to believe that money is everywhere and we just have to figure out how to get more of it. My dear husband on the other hand believes that money is a scare product, there is only so much in the market and one cannot possibly get more of it.
Yesterday, I sat my husband down and went through with him some financial questions from a Personal Finance Workbook (yeah, they really do exist!). Although it was a very short questionnaire, it helped revealed some eye-opening insights. One of it is that (assuming he has a windfall), his priority will be to repay all his debts before he invests anything. Yours trully here will choose instead to invest to the max while repaying the the minimum amount. Thus, the problem lies herein. No right or wrong way, just which way to max your current position. One is very conservative, one is just the opposite. One is very careful and the other very daring.
However, once we understood this, we had a chance to explain ech others viewpoint and hopefully, we will be having more "calm & less stressed" money talk in the household.
Either way, hubby still thinks I am a little nuts about this whole obsession with money. Woo-hoo!!
October 31 Kissing & huggingRyan has been able to kiss and hug us for some time now.
However, last Sunday, while playing with Ryan on the sofa, he looked me deep into the eyes and came up to me with his hands cupping my face and planted a kiss on my left cheek.
Talk about bliss man, I was so touched, I cried. I know, I am a softie, but I am also a proud mother.
Muak Muak!! AmazingSlightly over a month ago, as we were having dinner, Ryan suddenly called out "Jie Jie", "Gor Gor", "Poh Poh", "Goong Goong" - I was elated! After the delightful moment blew over, I wonder if Ryan really knows/ can differentiate who is who. Again, Ryan surprised me by actually being able to point to the right person and called out to them.
2 weeks ago, my parents were in town and decided to drop in at nanny's to see Ryan. That evening when I fetched Ryan, he told me "Poh Poh", "Goong Goong" .... repeatedly until I asked if "Poh Poh and Goong Goong came to see you?" ... to which he nodded in agreement.
Amazing.
And for the longest time that I can remember (which is quite a few months ago), Ryan has managed to let me know exactly what he wants by nodding in agreement or shaking his head in disagreement. Again, I wondered if he knows what I am saying. My thoughts were confirmed when one day I was asking if he wanted to change his nappies and he shook his head. I proceeded to change anyway and was met with a sudden burst of temper and cries and the harderst pry you ever encountered! So, I am convinced that he actually understands me.
Amazing.
October 12 S***** Bank!!!I am bloody mad right now!
I just got a call from A Bank - you know, the one with the camel sticking out. Up till now, my perception of the bank has never been in the top 50percentile. Well, as of today, it has no chance to surface above the lowest of the lowest scale!!!
A little background - I'd applied for a card sometime this year/ late last year cause they had this reading light up for grabs when you sign on. Being the Malaysian I am, I did just that. When the card arrived, I just tucked it away in my collection of credit cards and forgot all about it. Up till 2 months ago, I received a statement charging me annual fee. Pissed mad, I called and scolded and they gave me a form for me to cancel.....and I did, just that I had forgotten about that too. So .... fast forward to today.
Banker: Hello, itu Cik Chooi? Saya dari *****Bank. Saya mahu tahu kalau cik sudah tak mau guna kad kami?
Me: Yes, don't want it anymore.
Banker: Sudah Cik Chooi cancel itu kad?
Me: Huh? Sudah cakap bulan lalu ma. Apa lagi saya perlu buat???
Banker: Oh, you sudah isi itu borang untuk cancel?
Me (and I swaer I'd forgotten): Apa borang? Saya sudah cakap ma!!!
Banker: Tapi you perlu datang ke bank kami and sign itu borang.
Me: HUH?! You tak boleh faks ke?
Banker: Tak boleh faks sebab I dari Collections department, you kena call Customer Contact Centre untuk mereka faks itu borang.
Me (boilling mad): You dua tak same company ka? Apa sal you tak boleh terus cakap???
Banker: Memang satu company, tapi lain department, so tak boleh faks itu borang.
Wah at this point I was red in face, so....
Me: I think you all very mah fan la, buat ini buat itu.
Banker (some more want to question me): You ada ingat itu borang permohonan you sign? Ada cakap sana kalau tak guna cukup 12 kali satu tahun, kita akan charge.
Me: So?? Sekarang saya tak mau lagi.
Banker: You ada minta itu borang cancellation bulan lepas?
Me: Huh?!! Mana saya tahu ada itu borang? Patut you beritahu saya kan??
Banker: Ya ya ....
At this point, I slammed the phone, fumming, stupid bank.
Then I just October 11 My IQ is 122!I just spent 30 minutes online doing this IQ test. Long time never do this already, so it was quite fun.
The results?!
Congratulations, May!
Your IQ score is 122 This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.
Your Intellectual Type is Word Warrior. This means you have exceptional verbal skills. You can easily make sense of complex issues and take an unusually creative approach to solving problems. Your strengths also make you a visionary. Even without trying you're able to come up with lots of new and creative ideas. And that's just a small part of what we know about you from your test results. It was quite fun doing it although it seemed as if it would never end. Writer's blockDamned! Stuck again!
Everytime I try to write something, I get jammed in the middle. Then I read other people's blog and I desparately try to write something .... and then I hit the wall *!* Totally hate it man!
Every since I was young, I am a big big fan of books, magazines etc. Reading is my favourite hobby and I used to wonder how people can just write and write and write and make money out of it. How come I cannot one???
Now, I am convinced I am born with a condition - perpectual writer's block. So much for trying to write for money.
Another possibility thrown out of the window! September 01 Ryan is sickYou know what? This virus has got to stop itself circulating! I didn't get to go to Ikano on merdeka eve cause Ryan came down with a high fever! The doctor gave me some medication and after taking that he immediately puked all over! I tell you, next to my ex-neighbour at work, being puked on is the next most hated thing for me! Unfortunately, i cannot do anything about this....
In the middle of the night, Ryan got hotter and hotter, so I had to bundle him up with his bear and stuff, looking at the possibility that he was going to be admitted. But the hospital said it is ok and sponged him - i tell you i could not breathe when i heard him screaming because of the chillness! no book or any degree could possibly prepare me for this man! i was so close to tears! And they say motherhood is a life time process, i cannot imagine it if it got any worse than this.
Thankfully though he got better yesterday although his fever did not completely go away. But then i was so bad i slept through the 2.30am panadol dose and he was with fever again this morning! I tell you, motherhood has given me a strange power i did not know existed in me - the power of unconditional love and sleepless nights.
As of now, i am super groggy and just dying to go sleep and yet, my powers will come back when Ryan needs me. Some horrifying history! As a follow-up to my previous entry, I had a chat with my parents about safety on a motor bike.
I found out to my horror that when I was young, we used to go on my dad's Vespa with NO helmets on! Not even for my parents - dad said it was because it was not mandatory yet!
And guess where I was when on the bike? Standing right in front holding on to the handle of the bike! Dad said it was safe cause his legs will hold me in place - can you believe that?
I was so horrified and accused them of not loving me enough to protect me!
Miraculously, nothing ever happened to us ... probably that is why people nowadays think of their safety so lightly - it will never happen to me.
Thankfully things have change now - well, superficially anyway. Although the law says helmet is mandatory, they did not say that fastening the helmet properly is mandatory, hence the high numbers of people dying because of a head fracture etc.
Hopefully people will learn over time and realised that their safety is their own responsibility and not other people's. August 24 Interesting sights in the morningI have always hated traffic jams and used to swear off working in KL city centre. And as fate would have it, I got my current job right in the heart of the city. Therefore, traffic jams are a norm while getting to work and when I go home in the evening.
Two mornings ago, I had a very interesting observation at a junction when I stopped in front of some motor cyclists:
1) There was a father at the motor bike with the wife, both with fastened helmets, but their daughter sandwiched in between did not wear a helmet!
Perhaps they thought their heads were more fragile compared to the child's and therefore needed more protection.
Or maybe they thought that an accident would never happen to them.
Either way, it tugged a string in my heart knowing that the poor child is so innocent sitting there, enjoying the scene, all the while not knowing that danger is just lurking around the corner.
2) There was a motor cyclist who was talking on the handphone. The handphone was in his left hand and the right hand held his helmet. He was talking and talking and then I heard him shouting and then the next thing, he started banging his helmet on his bike!! I was shocked! His poor wife was trying to calm him down, but no such luck cause he shouted even louder!
3) There was another motor cyclist there who was just frowning ... probably thinking of when the policeman was going to ask him to go!
What a way to start the morning ... oops, here I go, the policeman has started to wave me on!
August 01 Pleasant surpriseSurprise surprise!
I just discovered that I am able to log into MSN Spaces and leave comments and even enter my own blog in the office!
I was previously barred and felt terribly frustrated not being able to leave comments and add an entry.
Wah, suddenly feel so inspired ... but it is time to go home, so maybe tomorrow then.
July 12 My latest home projectRecently I had this urge to revamp my study room.
After much pestering, hubby finally agreed to go buy some shelves from Ikea. We went one fine Sunday morning and got ourselves some book shelves and I was very eager to start on my "project".
Unfortunately, I had to wait 2 days for them to deliver the shelves ... by that time I was already very very "kan cheong". When it arrived on Tuesday, I bugged hubby to help put the shelves together - but he said "Wait till the weekend la!" Wah! I so feel like smacking him ... but then cannot piss off my handiman right?
I waited till Sunday and finally .... I chucked out half the things in that room and found myself with much fewer things. I was happy ... finally a nice room for my "me" time.
Till today (about 1 month already) there are still things which have not found its space, but it is getting there. Goes to show that although one can start off feeling very enthusiastic ... it gets a huge amount of effort to see things through.
My next project? I would like to say buy a landed house - but this project seems very far fetched at the moment.... Are you bored?Today I had lunch with a friend who complained that she is bored ... bored at work and bored at home.
My initial response ... Huh?! Bored at home?
I am happy to say that I am NEVER bored at home. I may be frustrated, may be annoyed, may even be a little hostile, but never bored.
I simply have too much to do at home!
I do not have time to be bored ... things just seem to happen everywhere and everytime .... people say it is because I have a kid to keep me busy.
But then, I have always been like this ... busy busy bee and no time to be bored.
May 25 A little updateOk, just so you know ... I have been rather good at keeping my little book.
Summary of my expenses since last Saturday when I first started....
Saturday - RM140.88
Sunday - 58.65
Monday - 26.30
Tuesday - 104.90
Wednesday - 12.50
Wah!!! See .. I told you my money keeps disapearing!
A friend remarked that she tried it once and was rather depressed when she looked at the entries, so decided not to continue.
Me? Well, I must say that I am motivated by it. At least it will make me think twice before I spend now!
The golden question - Will I continue? Well ..... I would think so, for the sake of my wallet!
May 20 Where has my money gone??Aiyo, I tell you...money in my wallet never stay put.
I never usually have money in my wallet, I believed that the plastic cards are better and safer.
However, it can be painful if you need to buy something and the credit card machine breaks down and you just have to buy that thing in your hand!
So, recently, I have made it a habit to put some money in my bag.
Guess what?!
The money disappears very quickly!
I find myself having to replenish my wallet at least twice a week and it has gotten alarming.
So, today, I went to one of those Indian book stalls and bought myself a little notebook .... to record my expenses and track where my money go.
I don't think it will be easy to do this but I will try ... will update you on where this is in a month's time then ...
ANOVA, ANCOVA etc.The last 2 days were spent attending a Multivariate Analysis trainning at SPSS. I was never a statistics person but I thought I should attend this as it will be useful in my work needs.
As it turns out, almost everyone at the class was an academician or someone relating to the medical profession. My colleague and I were the only ones who came from Marketing. Everyone was so serious about the examples and everyone wanted perfection. I was thinking, if we applied this precision in Market Research, we would not have gotten anything done!
I discovered that there are terms which I have never heard of and statistician whose names I could not pronounce and all those baffling formulas. Wah! I was so glad I did not pursue Statistics as a Masters degree, I would have been failing all the way!!
Being here for 2 days reaffirm my belief in data - You can make it say anything you want!! May 18 My retirement needsToday I have a very interesting conversation with my boss. We talked about retirement needs …. And I did an estimation on how much I would need for my retirement – it was staggering!!
With reasonable assumptions on inflation rates, investment rates and income earning rates, my estimated monthly expenses when I retire at 50 years old is RM19k … with a ready lump sum of RM4.8m by 50 years old to sustain this lifestyle. And how am I supposed to achieve that? Well, simply save RM10k on a monthly basis to achieve this number.
Wah! I almost fainted when I saw these figures. 5 years back when I did this, my retirement fund needed was RM3mil … now it has increased to close to RM5mil. However, I was being more conservative in today’s calculation … but what a change in 5 years!
Clearly, I need to re-evaluate my lifestyle and my investment strategies (like I have any!). But then when you come to think about it … why sacrifice when you have reached your golden years when you are suppose to enjoy your fruits of labour?
So what to do? Start planning now! May 16 Are we destroying the past?I read this interesting article on The Wall Street Journal today. The article, in short, was on how the digital age has changed our daily lives. It goes on to say that in the past, letters were written, put into envelopes, sealed with love (or not!), stamped with exotic stamps and posted. The postman became a very important person for us to keep in touch with our loved ones, our friends etc.
What has happened now? The digital world has taken over….the flick of a switch and the keyboard and the press of the little “Enter” button and our mail gets sent all over the whole world. Instant messaging becomes a lifestyle and a necessity in our lives.
But, how do we compare the value of a letter (which we know was lovingly written, carefully folded, mindfully mailed and punctually delivered to the doorstep) to the click of a button?
No doubt, one could argue that the e-mail/ IM could also have been lovingly written … but try pressing the “Backspace” on the aerogramme! It just does not work!
I have not thought of this before, but come to think of it, I do really look forward to receiving hand written letters/ cards more than digital ones. I may be a little sentimental, but many would agree that the letter brings not only a form of communication, but also an emotional attachment to it.
A letter not only communicates its contents but also the emotions of the writer – like how the words were written and cancelled 5 times, like the ink that was used, the way which the handwriting slants (how many of us actually can identify our friend’s handwriting nowadays?), the way in which the letter was folded (I really hate people who fold the paper in a size which is way smaller than the envelope … stresses me!) etc ….
Oh, the feeling of longing to see the postman arriving with the much anticipated letter with the wonderful scent of the sender and the beauty in the handwriting … look what the digital world has made us miss out!
HOWEVER, how many of us will keep in touch if it was not for the beauty of technology?
Me … I am still storing away all those letters and cards which I receive over the years, sad to say that these are now all replaced with digital mails, SMSes etc. … how to keep these ah?! May 13 Blogging resolutionI am sitting in my CFP class reading all the blogs which I have missed reading at the office, my lecturer's voice a complete blur to me .....
I realised that I have not been updating my blog for almost a month and poor Ryan has been completely cut off from being updated on his progress in life.
Well .... I am making a resolution to change all that .... well, after I am done with my CFP exams next June that is, wonder what will it be after that?? |
